Thank you to all who supported our 15th annual Thanksgiving Baskets program!
We provided traditional Thanksgiving food and turkeys to 106 families. Your generous response included donating over 380 bags of food, 215 packages of dinner rolls and 1,780+ pounds of turkey, all of which was blessed by Fr. Kowalski before being donated! More than 50 parishioners volunteered their time distributing bags, moving and checking bags, picking up rolls and turkeys, and loading the food on pick-up day!
The groups we supported included Pathways Family Shelter, Partnership Village, the Montagnard community of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Hispanic Migrant Ministry and Guilford Native American Association. We also helped 5 parish families.
The bags – donated by many parishioners and many companies including Bank of North Carolina (parishioner, Jayne McCullough), H&R Block (parishioner, Lee Ann Myers), Harris Teeter Friendly Center (parishioner, Karen Cribbin), Lowes Food of Oak Ridge (parishioner, Cathy Gennaro), The Fresh Market-Jefferson Village (parishioners, Sherry Reekes and Pat Jones), Appletree Daycare (Bob Greear, father-in-law of parishioner, Joe Sawyer, Jr.) were well embellished with lots of extra food, treats, table decorations, napkins, candles, beautiful hand crocheted and knitted dish cloths, towels, oven mitts, pie plates, foil roasting pans, candy, nuts, cards and so much more. They were beautiful!
It took all of us — the clergy and parish staff, RCIA and CCD (English & Spanish) programs, our OLG Women’s Club, Prayer Shawl and Craft groups, OLG School, our Hispanic community, Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court #1200, Knights of Columbus Council #939, the Saint Vincent de Paul Society, and many of our parishioners donating food, money and time to make this program successful!
Thank you for your great response to our brothers and sisters in need. I know the families were happy, they were grateful, and they felt loved. May you be blessed for your kindness and generosity!
During this time of preparation and generosity, we have a special appeal. One of our long-time parishioners, Margaret Roberts, has lost everything in a major house fire. There was no insurance. Many of you know that Margaret has faithfully given her time over the years to several of our ministries here at OLG. For many years she was the front office volunteer on Mondays and still fills in when she can. It is time for us to give back to Margaret and take care of one of our own.
On Sunday, December 4, the Grace Fund collection will be donated for the purpose of helping Margaret get back on her feet. We realize that this is short notice and you may not be prepared to donate today so our parish office will continue to accept donations for this purpose. We also ask your prayers.
